A mathematician with distinguished contributions to differential and algebraic geometry

Dr. Narasimhan’s major contributions are in the field of algebraic and differential geometry, more specifically in the field of vector bundles. His work with C.S. Seshadri, an Indian mathematician, on unitary and stable bundles, the Narasimhan-Seshadri theorem, is considered a pioneering work and has significant applications in gauge theory and conformal field theory used in mathematical physics. 

Dr. Narasimhan has also characterized real analytical functions, these are functions with derivatives of all orders that obey Taylor’s series--via Cauchy type inequalities. With S. Ramanan,  another Indian mathematician, he worked on proof of existence of universal connections, generalization of well-known results on existence of universal bundles in topology. 

Dr. Narasihman played a key role in the development of mathematics in India. He was the first Chairman of the National Board for Higher Mathematics. He is also a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Science and National Academy of Sciences, India. He is also the recipient of the Padma Bhushan award, King Faisal International Prize from Saudi Arabia, and is elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society.
